A short-link report observes requests at the redirect. People, social previews, security scanners, crawlers and browser prefetching can all open a URL, so useful analysis separates those categories.

Plan before publishing

Choose the metric for the question: human clicks for qualifying redirects, estimated uniques for repeat reduction, bot clicks for automated inspection, blocked clicks for geo enforcement, and destination conversions for business outcomes.

  • Human clicks: qualifying redirect activity.
  • Bots: automated or preview traffic.
  • Blocked: rejected geographic requests.

Build and test the workflow

A report with 1,240 human clicks, 180 bot requests and 35 blocked requests should use 1,240 as the engagement baseline. An estimate of 970 uniques does not prove exactly 970 people.

Worked example

Messaging apps fetch previews, security products inspect destinations and browsers prefetch likely navigation. Detection is heuristic, so automated traffic should remain visible as a separate classification rather than being erased.

Measure the right outcome

Redirect and destination totals measure different stages. Consent, page loading, bot filters, session windows, time zones and identity methods make exact agreement unlikely; compare definitions and trends.

Troubleshooting checklist

  • Bot spike: inspect timing and user agents.
  • High direct traffic: do not assume typed URLs.
  • Live totals differ: wait for aggregation and use historical reports.

Product limits and responsible use

Unique visitors, location and devices are estimates. A click is not a conversion, and guest links redirect without analytics collection. Use destination events for signups, purchases and revenue.
